Summer Reading for Kids Is Simple When There is A Reward!

I love to read, always have.  My oldest daughter is an avid reader, too.  My twins love books.  My husband?  No, he does not enjoy reading.  As a teacher, I feel his loss.

Getting your child to read over the summer is very important, especially if she or he has reading problems.  By maintaining the reading muscle over the summer, your child does not lose the gains s/he made during the school year.

There are a few ways to get your child motivated.

Borders has a reading book club-read ten books and pick out a free one.  The link is:

Barnes and Noble also has it's own summer reading rewards program.  Read eight books and get a free one.   The linkis:

If you have a TD Bank in your area and your child has a Young Savers Account (or you can open one once you earn the money), your child can read ten books and get ten dollars deposited to his or her account.  The link is:

Go to your local library and check out its summer reading program.  Our library has incentives for the hours read, and then my kids can go for a prize.  Last year, the good prizes ran out early, but my kids managed to earn Dunkin Donuts gift certificates and some plastic prizes.  They were thrilled.

You can also create your own reading incentives at home.  The reward should be whatever works best for your child.

  1. I have been blessed with four kids that are avid readers. But I don't see anything wrong at all about giving kids incentives and rewards for reading. The benefits are enormous!

  2. I'm married to a non reader too. My youngest likes to read but you have to convince her the book is good first. Wears me out but I'm glad they are all readers now that they are older because I have someone to discuss books with!

  3. Great post! I love reading myself and hope to instill this in my children. My son will be starting kindergarten in the fall and I'm looking for ways to encourage his love for reading and getting him to read on his own. Thanks for the helpful advice and links. I found you through GenXMom, so glad I did :)

  4. We have a summer reading program at our libraries in which the kids can read so many books or pages and get prizes. Of course, my son is now in the teenaged club and my daughter is bored with the prizes... But still, thank goodness, they're voracious readers!

  5. This is always a challenge for me with my kids. We have tried the Borders club before and liked it. One year one of my kid's teachers did some sort of challenge for my daughter. It was great.
